Anti-Candida Diet for Depression

The Anti-Candida Diet for depression is a natural remedy for depression if your depression is brought about by Candida yeast overgrowth.

Alternative therapies like Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D. (orthomolecular psychiatry pioneer) and Richard Podell (mainstream internist with an interest in alternative therapies) have seen how their depressed patients, with many signs and symptoms suggestive of the Candida Syndrome (CS), improved from an anti-candida diet, when conventional or orthomolecular (nutritional) treatment had proved ineffective [1].

When it comes to treating depression caused by candidiasis, studies have shown how local manifestations of yeast infection (e.g. vaginal thrust) will continue to appear until bowel candida is under control. As such, local treatment of yeast infection is not sufficient [3].

As such, to deal with your candida-induced depression, you will need to go on a comprehensive anti-candida diet for depression. Such an anti-candida diet will be “more effective in treating chronic candidiasis than simply trying to kill the candida with a drug or natural anti-candida agent”, as Michael Murray, N.D., of Issaquah, Washington, author of Chronic Candidiasis: The Yeast Syndrome, recommends [3].

Avoiding substances that promote candida growth

One important component of a comprehensive anti-candida diet for depression entails eliminating or reducing your intake of foods that promote the growth of candida. In other words, your anti-candida diet for depression needs to starve off the candida.

Foods that promote candida growth

Leyardia Black, N.D., of Lopez Island, Washington, says “in treating candida, my basic dietary taboos are sweets, alcohol and refined carbohydrates” [3].

Carbohydrate-rich foods, especially sweet or refined carbohydrates encourage candida proliferation and hence need to be avoided [1].

Some recommend that sugar must be avoided in all its various forms (eg. sucrose, dextrose, fructose, fruit juices, honey, maple syrup, molasses, milk products, most fruits and potatoes) [3].

Others recommend that you permanently avoid all refined sugars, milk sugars (lactose), and high-carbohydrate simple-sugar foods [2]. And still others recommend a low-carbohydrate diet during the candida-linked depression treatment [2].

Foods containing yeast (e.g. baked foods, vinegar) or food molds (e.g. mushrooms and fermented foods) should be avoided until possible allergies are diagnosed. This is important because allergies can further stress the immune system and reduce its ability to fight the candida [3].

In Depression Free, Naturally, Joan Mathews Larson, Ph.D., recommends that you avoid the following in the first 3 weeks of your anti-candida diet for depression – fruits and fruit juices, cheeses (especially moldy cheeses like blue cheese), vinegar containing foods, mushrooms, melons, leftover foods (because molds grow quickly), breads and peanuts.
