The SAM e Depression Treatment

The SAM e depression treatment involves the use of a biochemical, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (sometimes known as SAMe, SAM-e or SAM), in dealing with depression naturally.

SAMe is made by the body, using the essential amino acid, methionine, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

SAM-e and depression

A study carried out at the Depression Clinical and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston found that dietary supplementation of SAM-e helped half of the patients with major depression improve, at the same time helping 43% of them to go into remission. [2]

Many other clinical studies have shown how the SAM e depression treatment worked more rapidly as compared to antidepressant drugs, relieving depression in one or two weeks instead of the normal six to eight weeks. Also, SAM was able to enhance the effects of antidepressant drugs, as seen in a large double-blind study from Mexico. [1]

How SAM-e works

SAM e possesses a biochemical unit, known as a methyl group, which it donates to a receiver through a process known as methylation. In turn, methylation plays a part in biochemical processes, such as the transformation of an amino acid into a neurotransmitter, as well as the rejuvenation of a neuron’s membrane. [1]

As such, SAM e is needed in the synthesis (as well as break down) of mood-stabilizing or enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Subsequently the SAM e depression treatment possibly works through boosting serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. [1]

According to Syd Baumel, studies suggest that SAM e depression treatment is most effective for depression characterized by lethargy, apathy, guilt and suicidal tendencies. Richard Brown, psychiatrist from the Columbia University, found that SAM-e brings about dramatic energy level increases in patients. [1]

Because more than half of the SAM in our body is made in the liver, depressives with liver diseases may particularly need SAM e. [1]

Methionine: an alternative to SAM

Because the SAM e depression treatment can be costly, an alternative is the essential amino acid, methionine, which is the precursor to SAMe [1].

According to Syd Baumel, animal research cited by Eric Braverman, M.D., and team found that methionine crossed the blood-brain barrier readily and raised brain levels of SAM better than SAM itself. [1]

In addition, methionine also removes excess brain histamine that causes depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders [5].

Dosages

The University of Maryland Medical Centre noted that the recommended dosage for SAM in depression studies is 800 – 1,600 mg daily, in 2 divided doses (morning and afternoon). [3]
